It serves as the raw feedstock for one of the game's most critical processing chains, eventually yielding both Plastic and Fuel—materials that gate an enormous portion of Tier 3 and Tier 4 manufacturing. Without a steady flow of Crude Oil through your pipeline network, your factory's upper tiers simply stall.

Lore & Background

The oil deposits of Satisfactory present themselves as dark, tar-like seeps in the sandy terrain, almost geological in their appearance. They do not sparkle or glow like the more exotic minerals; they simply sit there, patient and black, waiting for a factory to be built above them. The Oil Well you construct is a squat, industrial structure that drives extraction equipment into the deposit, and from that moment a continuous stream of Crude Oil begins to flow into your pipe network. The sound it makes—a low, rhythmic pumping—becomes one of the ambient hums of any serious factory.

What makes the oil chain feel so central to the game's design is how it sits at a crossroads. The Oil Refinery splits Crude Oil into Light Oil and Heavy Oil, and from there the paths diverge: Light Oil feeds the Plastics Factory alongside water to produce the ubiquitous Plastic, while Heavy Oil feeds the Fuel Generator alongside water to produce Fuel. This means a single well, properly connected, can simultaneously keep your plastic production and your fuel reserves alive. The interdependence is elegant, and the moment your pipeline finally carries a steady stream of black liquid from desert to factory, the satisfaction is almost tactile.

Fans often note that the desert biome, where all oil deposits reside, is one of the more hostile stretches of the map. The heat, the open terrain, and the creatures that roam there make the journey to your well a small adventure every time you need to inspect a clogged pipe or add a second extraction line. She'd been out here for three hours, chasing a pressure drop that turned out to be a single kink in the routing near the second junction. Fixed it with a wrench and a muttered curse. Now the flow was back to full, and in the distance she could see the ghostly blue glow of the Plastics Factory cycling, the Fuel Generator ticking over. Two different products, one black stream, one well.

She keyed her comms. "Oil line's back to spec. Tell the refinery operators they can stop worrying." A pause. Then, quieter, to herself: "Same as always. Just more pipe."

The dunes stretched out in every direction, silent and patient, and the well kept pumping.

Reader's Guide

Crude Oil is found exclusively in the desert biome, where dark oil deposits dot the sandy terrain. To extract it, you must place an Oil Well structure directly on a deposit. The well will begin pumping Crude Oil into your pipe network, which you then route to an Oil Refinery.

The Oil Refinery takes Crude Oil and splits it into two products: Light Oil and Heavy Oil. From there, the chain branches. Light Oil is fed into a Plastics Factory (alongside water) to produce Plastic, the backbone of Tier 3 and Tier 4 components. Heavy Oil goes into a Fuel Generator (also with water) to produce Fuel, which powers your vehicles, rockets, and various machines. Both outputs are Tier 3, and both are consumed in quantities that can shock a new factory builder.

Practically speaking, you will want to cluster your oil infrastructure: well, refinery, plastics factory, and fuel generator in one area to minimize pipe routing. The desert is open and flat, which actually makes pipe runs straightforward, but the distance back to your main factory can be significant. Budget for long pipe lines and consider a small satellite station with a chest buffer near the well.

There is something deeply, almost stubbornly satisfying about watching that black liquid flow steadily through a long, straight pipe across the dunes, feeding two separate production lines from a single source. It is the cleanest example in the game of one input, two vital outputs, and the quiet hum of a well that just keeps working.
