Refined Oil

One liquid in, three lifelines out—the hinge on which your entire factory turns.

Refined Oil

Refined Oil is a Tier 2 processed liquid material in Satisfactory, produced by feeding Crude Oil into a Refinery. It sits at a critical branching point in the game's material economy: a single stream of Refined Oil can be directed toward Plastic, Sulfur, or Fuel, making it one of the most consequential intermediate resources a FICSIT engineer will handle.

Because Crude Oil is only available from Oil Wells in the Oil Dune biome, Refined Oil effectively anchors an entire supply-chain operation to one specific region of the map. Players who master its automation early gain a massive advantage in Tier 3 and 4 production, since nearly every advanced recipe eventually traces back to one of Refined Oil's three children.

Lore & Background

In the FICSIT corporate framework, Refined Oil is catalogued as a foundational feedstock for the colony's material economy. The Refinery, a compact industrial unit with a distinctive cylindrical body and glowing processing chamber, takes the raw, viscous Crude Oil pumped from the dune fields and distills it into a cleaner, more versatile intermediate. The process is straightforward in principle but demands a steady, uninterrupted supply of Crude Oil, which in turn requires a functional Oil Well and a pump station to keep the flow moving.

What makes Refined Oil so central is its role as a tri-way junction. The same Refinery unit that produces it can also split it into Plastic (combined with water), Sulfur (a chemical byproduct), or Fuel (for powering vehicles, generators, and the player's own jetpack). This means a single well-maintained oil operation can simultaneously feed the plastic fabrication lines, the sulfur-based chemical chains, and the energy infrastructure. Losing that pipeline to a broken pump or a dry well can cascade into factory-wide shutdowns within minutes.

Fans often describe the moment their first Refined Oil line goes fully automated—crates of Crude Oil flowing in, neat streams of Refined Oil flowing out, and three separate output lines branching away—as one of the most deeply satisfying 'click' moments in the game. It is the point where the factory stops feeling like a collection of isolated machines and starts feeling like a living system.

In Their Own Story

The dunes stretched flat and golden under a bruised twilight sky, the Oil Well's pump arm clicking in its slow, eternal rhythm. Mara wiped grease from her forehead and watched the Refinery's status light pulse a steady green. Three output pipes fanned out from its base like the legs of a metal spider: one carrying a milky white stream toward the Plastic line, one a faint yellow toward Sulfur storage, and one a dark amber toward the Fuel depot. Somewhere down the line, a conveyor clattered and a stack of empty Crude Oil barrels tumbled off the edge into the sand. She sighed, grabbed her wrench, and jogged back. The factory hummed. The dunes held their breath. And the oil kept flowing, patient and black, as if it had been waiting under that sand since before the FICSIT beacon first lit the sky.

Reader's Guide

In the wild, Refined Oil doesn't exist—only Crude Oil does, gushing from Oil Wells scattered across the Oil Dune biome. You'll need a Pump to extract it and a Refinery to process it. The Refinery is a single-input, multi-output building: feed it Crude Oil and it yields Refined Oil, which you can then route (via the same Refinery or a separate one) into Plastic, Sulfur, or Fuel depending on your factory's needs.

Downstream, Refined Oil is the parent of three Tier 2 essentials. Plastic feeds into Polymers, which cascade into almost every Tier 3+ recipe. Sulfur is a prerequisite for Sulfuric Acid and, ultimately, for Refined Silicon and other advanced materials. Fuel powers your vehicles, generators, and the jetpack that keeps you mobile across the map. Losing any one of those three lines is a real operational risk.

A small note of appreciation: there is something quietly meditative about watching a long, clean belt of Refined Oil glide past your window while the Refinery hums at a steady 100 %. It is the moment the factory stops being a problem to solve and becomes a thing that simply works. Fans call it 'oil zen,' and they are not wrong.
