The oil was supposed to go to the Refinery. It was not going to the Refinery. It was going, with the slow, patient determination of a river finding a crack in a dam, into the open top of the Water Tank he had forgotten to cap. Three seconds of watching the amber stream curl downward, mixing with the pale blue, and he felt the particular, hollow thud of a mistake that would take forty minutes to clean up. He did not curse. He did not throw anything. He simply walked over to the line, found the little Valve he had placed two hundred metres upstream—because he had placed it, because he had always placed a Valve at every junction, even when he was too impatient to want one—and he clicked it. Closed. The stream shuddered, slowed, stopped. The oil pooled in the pipe with a soft, metallic drip. He exhaled. He walked back to the Refinery. The Valve is a short pipe segment with a mechanical actuator on top; when open, fluid passes through at full rate; when closed, the line is sealed. No power draw, no buffer, no throughput penalty. It is a binary gate, and it is the most honest buildable in the game.
The 'aha' moment hits in your first fluid session. You have laid a pipe from an Oil Pump to a Refinery, and the oil is flowing, and you are happy. Then you need to reroute that line to a different Refinery, and you realise you cannot just pull a pipe out of a running line without dumping oil everywhere. You place a Valve upstream, close it, swap the pipe, open it again. Four seconds of work. You did not lose a single drop. You did not have to restart the Pump. You just… turned a valve.
